Abstract

In the paper, the author analyzes various aspects of private prisons in the United States of America, as the ground on which the modern concept of prison privatization arose. The first part of the work will be devoted to the historical development of private prisons in the US, starting with the earliest forms of involvement of the private sector in the execution of prison sentences, in the form of a private transport system for prisoners and the engagement of prisoners in a wide variety of physical jobs within the private sector, up to modern models of the organization of the relevant institutions. In the second part of the paper, the author will examine the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and political turmoil on the American political scene on the representation of private penitentiaries in the system of execution of criminal sanctions in the United States of America.
